Story: The Three Questions (Written n illustrated by Jon J Muth)

The story is about a young boy named, Nikolai who has 3 questions in which he is seeking answers to.  The questions are:

  1. 1.     When is the best time to do things?
  2. 2.     Who is the most important one?
  3. 3.     What is the right thing to do?

His 3 friends, Sonya, the heron, Gogol, the monkey and Pushkin, the dog tried to answer his questions but their answers do not seem quite right.  Finally, Nikolai decided to seek counsel from Leo, a wise old turtle who lives in the mountains.  He was sure that Leo would know the answers to all is 3 questions.

Just as he finished helping Leo managed his garden, he heard a cry for help, it was a panda who’s leg had been injured by a fallen tree. He saved the panda and carried her to Leo’s house but the panda was worried about her child who was lost in the forest. Nikolai ran out and save the little panda.

Leo smiled at what the boy did and Nikolai felt great peace within himself having saved the panda and her child. At the same time, he also felt disappointed as he had not find the answers to his 3 questions.   At this moment, Leo the turtle look at the boy and told him that his questions have been answered.

Leo explained:

” Yesterday, if you had not stayed to help me dig my garden, you wouldn’t have heard the panda’s cries for help in the storm. Therefore the most important time was the time you spent digging the garden.

Later, when you found the injured panda, the most important time was the time you spent mending her leg and saving her child. The most important ones were the panda and her baby. And the most important thing to do was to take care of them and make them safe.”

In summary, remember that there is only one important time, and that time is NOW.  The most important person is always the one you are with at that moment.  And the most important thing is to do good for the one who is standing at your side. For these, are the answer to what is most important in this world.

Meditation:

Regardless of where you are now and what you have to do later, in this moment the only thing is to meditate and rest.

For just a few minutes, feel the sensation of your breadth as it is right now. Not doing anything else, not going anywhere else. Feel your breadth as you breadth in and breadth out.

Maybe your breadth is slow and steady, Maybe it is quick and short. All it matters is that you pay attention to how it feels.

Art and Craft:

Coloring of the NOW watch.
